Electricity, water, and gas are commonly submetered. Submeters can be installed as part of new construction or retrofitted in some properties.

Retrofitting can be tricky since plumbing tends to be modified over time. Choose an experienced master plumber to design, and install, any retrofitting you plan to do.

If submetering is not financially or technically feasible, regulations in your area may allow other types of allocation, such as a ratio utility billing system (RUBS) that can have the same conservation and allocation benefits, without the upfront investment of buying and installing submeters.
